New Year

The sandpit becomes a swamp.

Ankle deep, woo!

We spent New Year at home this year. Tara, Dajon, Sanna, Elleke and Tara's mum Kay stayed over which was fun. Daisy was beside herself with excitment about Sanna staying in her room and the girls managed to stay awake up there until after 11pm. Zach passed out exhausted at about 10pm, lightweight. Everyone but me (again) was on the champers and Andy and Dajon had a great time murdering Singstar and Metallica Guitar Hero until the small hours. I headed to bed at about the same time as 'Lady in Red' got it's second airing. We spent the next morning in the garden then enjoyed about 20 minutes of pelting rain in the late afternoon. It proper bucketed down, very exciting. I forgot to take NYE photos but got a couple of the downpour.

Christmas Day

Stockings, thanks Santa!

The obligatory chocolate Santa.

Finger puppets!

Waiting very patiently.

A Thomas book!

Penguin puppet!

Zach flexes his muscles to play Santa.

First try on the new scooters.

Sticker time.

Look what Santa left.
Zach copies mummy's pose...

...while Daisy gives Daddy a cuddle.
We had a very quiet Christmas day which was really nice. The kids loved all their presents and had a lot of fun playing with them. Daisy particulary loves her scooter and wants to scoot everywhere, she's pretty speedy. Zach is a bit young for the whole Santa thing but it's the first year that Daisy has really 'gotten it' which was lovely. She came flying in to our room at 6.30am with eyes like saucers, clutching her stocking and saying 'I didn't see him (santa), I was sleeping'. Santa may have gone over Zach's head but presents sure didn't, he spent a lot of the day saying 'presents, presents, yay, yay!'

Gingerbread men

Daisy's beautiful gingerbread man in on the left. Zach's m&ms were in his tummy.

Zach's reaction when told he'd eaten all his m&ms and wasn't to eat Daisy's.

The kids decorated gingerbread men a few days ago. They are both chocolate fiends but Daisy managed to control herself and actually stick her m&ms on without eating them. Zach didn't.

Merry Christmas 2009

Here is a copy of my Christmas email:

Dear all

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2009

It is that time of year again! Shall I go for length or quality? I guess it will probably be neither.

Seasons greetings from the desert. A pleasant & sunny 26 degrees today, although it did rain (very briefly) earlier. Dubai is a very different place to a year ago, although in many ways it is a better place. There is less traffic, prices of everything have stopped going up, rents are reasonable again, and things are generally less frenetic than before. However, a lot of friends and colleagues have lost jobs and most people here have been impacted by the financial meltdown somehow.

It has been another wonderful and interesting year. Daisy has started school and received her first report card already, which states that 'she is a quiet and contented, well behaved girl and she has pleasing manners'. Quiet & well behaved? Either they've got her confused with someone else, or she's sharing a class with a pack of wilderbeast. To be serious, she is a beautiful and clever girl, and we are very proud of her.

Zach has also grown up into a handsome boy (he looks like me of course), who loves singing and dancing. His speech is just amazing, which is probably because he mimics everything Daisy does, and by 'ell, she does a lot of talking. He's lost his baby chubbiness (*sob* - Bec) and his favourite hobby is shouting (loudly and constantly). He has also started playgroup, and talks about his friends there a lot. He insisted the other day that it was school not playgroup - such a big chap.

I can't quiet believe that there will soon be another one (boy, due mid feb). I think we've worked out how to fit them all in the car, but not the buggy. Zach is not going to like losing 'my' buggy. Bec is coping wonderfully with the kids and the pregnancy, but I'm not sure how she does it. I have to go back to work for a rest after each weekend.

Work has been absolute carnage. My company has basically collapsed under a sea of debt and inept decision making (not my decisions, honest!). We had already made 400 redundant earlier in 2009, then His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum got out his gold biro, and with a swift flick of the wrist, transferred 80% of the company to Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI), which is proper Government. Hence, another 100 support staff had to be made redundant, and we are now down to less than 250 staff from a peak of over 2,000. It has been very hard work, scary at times, and I don't think we've hit rock bottom yet, although we are now leaner and profitable.

We've also moved house, which has been incredibly hard work (for Bec). I've been so busy at work, that Bec has organised everything and she has done a fantastic job. The decoration is perfect and the garden is wonderful, hence we are very happy with our new home. It is also bigger, and better located, so let us know if any of you are passing through this part of the world.

Anyway, I think that will have to be it. Time for beer and a Christmas movie.

As always, you can see what we've been up to via http://blog.becandy.com

We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a (more) prosperous New Year. Please keep in touch.

Lots of love from

Andy, Bec, Daisy, Zach and Pookie 3 x

Madinat Christmas

The kids take a break from cake to eat some nutritious chips.

The model train.

Hark! The wicker angel sings.

Daisy's bunch of balloons.

Zach was thrilled with his balloon sword...

...but crushed when it popped.

Carols.

Yes, another day, another Christmas activity! Who would have thought we live in a Muslim country. This time up, it's the Madinat. Santa, mulled wine, snowy vistas and carol singers. Nice.

Festive fairs

Daisy busts some moves on the way to the fair.

While the boys sedately push their buggies.

Daisy rolls down the hill while Zach chills with some Tai Chi.

Rolling...

...ready to roll!

There are loads of festive fairs on in the weeks leading up to Christmas. They are a good chance for the kids to gorge on sugar and go on bouncy castles. We went to two last Friday. The first at Daisy's school in the morning then another at the local Ranches school in the afternoon. We only managed to lose Daisy twice, top parenting.

Zach's Christmas party

Looking sharp.

The hat lasted about three seconds.

Zach had his play group Christmas party last week and had a great time. He was very pleased with his secret santa gift of a train and even more pleased with the Christmas party food.
